Having a lucid dream is an exciting prospect. Flying stealth helicopters, battling sith lords, having a secret liaison with your favorite celebrity or just hanging out on a tropical beach with a long lost relative are all pretty cool things to do. But learning how to lucid dream can be challenging for many people. So, do lucid dreams come naturally sometimes?
Lucid dreams can come naturally. In fact, 55% of the population will have at least 1 lucid dream with up to 37% having 1 or more every month. However, most natural lucid dreams are uncontrolled and lack real-life clarity. Consistent, controlled, vivid, lifelike, lucid dreams only come through induction techniques and training.

Can you lucid dream without trying?
Learning to lucid dream can be a bit of a pain for some people. Although it is not difficult to learn this skill it does require a certain degree of dedication and a fair amount of persistence before you have your first lucid dream.
So, is there an easier way to do this? Can you lucid dream without trying?
It is possible to lucid dream without trying.
Over half the population will have at least 1 lucid dream in their lifetime.
However, these are not the type of lucid dreams that are popularly talked about online. They are uncontrolled lucid dreams that are less vivid than controlled ones.
Only through training and by deliberately inducing lucid dreams can you guarantee a controlled, vivid and lifelike lucid dream.
Although it is possible to have a lucid dream naturally, the lucid dream is almost guaranteed to be an uncontrolled lucid dream that lacks the vibrancy, color and feel of reality.
I covered the two different types of lucid dreams in this article and I advise you to read that if you want to fully understand the difference between most natural lucid dreams and induced ones.
I will briefly cover the two types of lucid dreams here again as it is directly related to the topic of this article.
The 2 types of lucid dreams:
- Uncontrolled lucid dreams. These usually lack the clarity and vibrancy of real life.
- The dreamer can only control their own actions and nothing else in the dream.
- Controlled lucid dreams. These are vibrant, colorful and feel life real life. The dreamer has full control over the dreamworld and all the characters in it.
Both trained and untrained lucid dreamers (people who have lucid dreams naturally) can have either type of lucid dream without trying.
In fact, just reading about lucid dreaming and thinking about it can be often to trigger a lucid dream the next time you sleep.
But more often than not it will be an uncontrolled lucid dream and will usually be very short in duration.
In almost all circumstances someone who is untrained in lucid dreaming techniques will find themselves experiencing an uncontrolled lucid dream.
Although this will be clearer and more vivid than a normal dream , it will still not be as clear as real life or a controlled lucid dream.
Additionally, in an uncontrolled lucid dream the dreamer will have virtually no control over the dreamworld or anything in it, being only able to direct their own actions.
On the flip side, a trained lucid dreamer can take steps to take full control over any dream in which they become lucid.
Even if they wake up within an uncontrolled lucid dream they will have the knowledge and expertise to change it into a fully controlled lucid dream.
This usually has the effect of making the dream much clearer and much more vibrant and lifelike as well.
Why we all want to lucid dream without trying
The desire to have a lucid dream without trying, or having to put any effort into learning the skill, has lead to the development of some good and some very bad products.
One example of a product that is not worth even a fraction of its cost is the lucid dream mask. Most lucid dream masks don’t work and are a complete waste of money!
There are a few that do work but it is difficult to find them as they are no longer made. Read the linked article for more information on that.
Personal experimentation with dream herbs has shown me that they can be very beneficial for both inducing lucid dreams and lengthening their duration.
They can also make your lucid dreams much more colorful and exciting. Likewise most lucid dreaming pills also work (simply because they are just capsules filled with a mixture of the most powerful dream herbs).
This desire to experience full-blown controlled lucid dreams without having to try has given rise to a ton of crowd funding products that have never seen the light of day. Such products they promise instant and easy lucid dreams but fail to deliver on their promises – because no such thing exists.
There is no magic-bullet for lucid dreaming. It is a life skill and like all worthwhile skills it takes a certain degree of dedication and persistence to gain that skill.
Now this doesn’t mean it is difficult to learn how to lucid dream. It isn’t. But it does require persistence which unfortunately most people lack.
The simple fact is, you need to put in a certain amount of work if you want to have consistent, controlled and lifelike lucid dreams.
Learning to lucid dream takes a real commitment. But, the good news is that everyone can learn to lucid dream.
Learning to lucid dream starts by learning induction techniques.
Let’s look to see if you can induce a lucid dream.
Can you induce a lucid dream?
Rather than waiting and hoping for a lucid dream to happen naturally, without you trying to have one, why not learn how to use this night skill.
It is possible to induce a lucid dream using one or more specific lucid dreaming induction techniques.
Everyone can lucid dream but they first need to find the specific induction technique that works for them.
Through a persistent strategic approach it is possible to test each induction technique in sequence to find the one that works for you.
Lucid dreaming induction techniques are varied. There are a range of different induction techniques that use different approaches to induce lucidity in the dreamer.
Why have different techniques to achieve the same aim? Well, multiple techniques have been developed for inducing lucid dreams because different people require a different approaches.
As human beings we tend to fall into different categories and this is no different when it comes to how we sleep and dream.
For example, not everyone follows the same sleep routine or has the same sleep cycle. Some people will sleep for 6 hours while others sleep for 12.
Then there are those, like myself, who can get by on 4 or 5 hours of sleep at night as long as they can grab an hour or two nap during the day (an excellent time for inducing lucid dreams).
Lucid Dreaming induction technique examples
So, not all lucid dreaming induction techniques are suitable for everyone.
For example the WBTB (wake back to bed) technique will not suit everyone because it requires waking yourself up in the middle of the night and then going back to sleep.
This can lead to a disruptive night’s sleep for those people who find it difficult to return to sleep (I am one of them).
The WILD (wake induced lucid dream) technique requires you drift off to sleep while maintaining full consciousness.
You actually allow the dream to unfold before your closed eyes and remain conscious the whole time. Some people simply cannot do this.
On the flip side the DILD (dream induced lucid dream) requires that you train your brain to wake you up (consciously not physically) within a dream that is already happening.
This usually requires a lot of preparation during the day such as using reality checks.
There are other techniques that you can use to induce lucid dreams with each one being a better fit for certain people than others.
The only way to guarantee you start to have lucid dreams is to systematically test each induction technique until you find the one that works best for you.
This usually involves trying each technique for 7 days uninterrupted (not missing a day) before moving on to the next one.
Although this does take effort and persistence, the actual techniques themselves are very easy to use.
It’s just that it can get a bit frustrating if you have been trying to lucid dream for several weeks with no success.
It really does take persistence but the effort is so worthwhile and doing this guarantees that you will lucid dream rather than waiting for it to happen naturally (which it may never do).
Plus, your first lucid dream is always the hardest.
It gets easier after that. And, once you train yourself to induce lucid dreams deliberately you will find that you start to have additional lucid dreams without trying.
Your brain just gets used to it and wakes you up in your dreams.
By far the best way to learn lucid dreaming is through a proven course that uses tactics and techniques to get you lucid dreaming fast.
It then teaches you simple, but advanced, dream-control techniques to reach that point where you have omnipotent power within your lucid dreams – induction techniques are only half the story!
Once you learn to become lucid you must then learn how to control the dream and this is why I always advise would-be lucid dreamers to invest in a course.
Dream control does not always come as part of learning how to induce a lucid dream and, in fact, often does not.
